Our Story
Founders Ellie Mui and Amanda An first found their inspiration and passion to spread their joy of debate and philosophy during their experience debating at Yale University one summer. Through debate, they learned about the worldwide problems and humanitarian crises existing in today’s world.
They researched these topics with extensive research and fiery enthusiasm and discovered the link between philosophy and the world. Thereafter, they began aiming to educate children around the world on how philosophy shapes the actions of world leaders. Having had years of debate experience and earning numerous national and international awards in debate, both of them decided to initiate their goal of spreading their knowledge.
Deeply motivated to achieve this goal, Ellie and Amanda took their first step by founding a philosophy club at their school, for young minds to understand the core values of humans and how philosophy affects today’s major problems. The club took off and was launched in their school during the Fall of 2024. Throughout this experience, they were increasingly affirmed to spread their vision after visualizing their members’ enthusiasm.
As a result, they founded The American Philosophical Youth Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering youth through the transformative power of philosophy and debate. With this initiative, they aim to provide students across the globe with accessible resources, opportunities to explore complex ideas, and platforms to express themselves confidently.
Ellie and Amanda envision a world where young people are equipped not only with knowledge but also with the courage to lead and create meaningful change. Through their organization, they hope to inspire a generation of thoughtful, empathetic, and impactful leaders who will shape a more just and understanding world.

Our Impact & A Thank You Note
We are immensely proud of the impact APYS has made since its founding. What began as a small student-led initiative has grown into a community of 37 passionate leaders who have collectively contributed 1,560+ service hours, supported 375+ students, reached 51+ communities, and raised over $3,200 to advance educational opportunities. Every student taught, every hour volunteered, and every community reached represents another step toward our mission of creating thoughtful, confident, and engaged young leaders.
We thank each and every one of our team members, APYS families, and our donors for believing in our work. We believe that every student has the potential to blossom into both a confident leader and a compassionate individual, just as the flower in our logo symbolizes growth and possibility.
Warm regards,
Founders Ellie Mui & Amanda An
